Grand Lake Preserve Trails

Info: Trail system created by the Indian River Conservancy.  For some pictures of a ruins along the trail click here.  Very nice trail, fairly well marked and well maintained.
If coming from Redwood there is a trail to Butterfield Lake at the second parking area, and to access the trail on the other side of the road you must walk up the road a short distance and watch for the trail on the right.  If parking at the first parking lot the trail is right across the road.
There is also a trail on the island (Marc A.F. Baker Island) across Grass Lake, you can either carry your canoe in on the trail (which is a bit hard) or continue down Burns Road (turns into Butler Road) and watch for the right-hand turn that goes to the DEC boat launch, then you can kayak/canoe or motorboat (engines under 10HP) down the lake to the island where there is a boat dock and the trailhead on the island (see first first map below for location of boat launch).  The main trail is well-maintained but the island trail is lesser so, but it is VERY well marked.  It is fairly short but a bit rough because the trail is rough in places, worth it for a nice hike.

Directions/Location: (Also see map at bottom of page) Take Route 37 northward toward Redwood. At the beginning of the village of Redwood look for a right-hand road called Cottage Hill Road. Turn onto this. When you eventually come to a fork bear left (continue on Burns Road, the right-hand road is Cottage Hill Road). When you come to the junction with the Lake of the Woods DEC sign bear left (continue on Burns Road). Watch for the parking area(s) on the left further down this seasonal road, there are two.  The trailhead is across from the first parking lot. The second parking area is approximately .6 of a mile further down the road, and is at a trailhead for the trail to Butterfield Lake, and there is another trailhead down the road for the longer Grand Lake Trail – park your car and walk down the road and watch for the trail sign on the right, it can be hard to find.  There is a kiosk in the woods a short distance. There are a number of trails in this system.
If you use a GPS “45590 Burns Road, Redwood” should get you close to the parking lots – don’t turn onto Fauteau Road, stay on Burns Road to find the parking lots.
To find the boat launch see directions in Info above and map below.
