The station started out as WFYF in 1987 and was owned by a group of local businessmen. It went bankrupt and was owned by a number of companies, at one time being a Fox affiliate (WNYF, part of WWNY, now is the local Fox affiliate).

They are currently an ABC affiliate with their studios in the P&C Plaza off Arsenal Street in Watertown with the transmitter located in Copenhagen. The station is owned by Newport Television.

WWTI also has the area's CW affiliate, called the North Country's CW (WBWT), simulcast on it's second digital subchannel and on Time Warner cable channel 31.
