Johnathan Cowan

Johnathan Cowan was an early settler in Watertown. He built the first grist mill in the village in 1802, on the island in the Black River. This island would become known as Cowan's Island, and is today called Beebee's Island.

Cowan owned land in the center of the village, and in 1805, he donated this land, along with others, for the creation of Public Square. Cowan later sued to try and reclaim this land, but was unsuccessful.
