The J.B. Wise parking lot sits behind Public Square's
north side. The lot can currently accommodate close to 400 vehicles. It is named for former Watertown
mayor James B. Wise
. The lot stretches behind the square from Mill Street
all the way to buildings located off of lower Court Street
The lot was once the site of Watertown's
rail station and numerous buildings, mostly belonging to the Hotel Woodruff
. The lot was created after the demolition of the rail station in the 1960's and the Hotel Woodruff
in the 1970's.
The parking lot has only been accessible from Black River Parkway (formerly City Center Drive), which runs behind the lot adjacent to Newall Street. In 2010, a connector road will be built so cars will be able to access the lot from Public Square
. This will coincide with a massive reconstruction of the parking lot, which was completed in 2011.
